#ant #summer #terrestrial

Another #ant pattern, this one looks a little more natural than the foam ant. Tied here in size 16 but I also tie this on a 14. If you're better than me you can tie them even smaller. #summer #terrestrial

Materials

  • TMC100
    Hook
  • Awesome 'Possum
    Dubbing
  • Flymaster
    Thread
  • Polypropylene Yarn
    Yarn
  • Whiting Pro Grade Cape
    Hackle

Instructions

  1. Start thread half way back the shank and wrap to the bend.
  2. Use dubbing to form the abdomen by creating an oblong ball.
  3. Wrap thread forward to the eye.
  4. Use dubbing to create the thorax by making a smaller ball and wrapping backwards.
  5. Tie in the yarn to create the post.
  6. Lash the hackle to the post, optionally add a dab of head cement to the thread wraps on the post. Trim the post to a manageable size, you can always trim it more later when the fly is finished to get your preferred proportions.
  7. Wrap the hackle down the post 3 or 4 times and secure it at the bottom with a couple thread wraps.
  8. Snip off the excess hackle and whip finish on the post.
